IVF debate: does less stimulation mean better embryos?

NCT ID NCT04983173

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looked at 110 women aged 35-40 with low ovarian reserve undergoing IVF. Half received a mild stimulation (clomiphene plus low-dose hormones) and half received a stronger stimulation (higher-dose hormones). The goal was to see which approach led to more good-quality blastocysts. Researchers also tracked hormone changes and egg counts to understand how stimulation intensity affects early embryo development.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Clomiphene citrate and recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (rFSH)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors choose the best stimulation intensity for IVF patients with low ovarian reserve, potentially improving embryo quality.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed Phase 4 trial with only 110 participants. Results may not apply to all infertility patients, and the study focuses on embryo quality, not live birth rates.
