One-Time iron infusion may speed up mobility recovery in hip fracture patients
NCT ID NCT06898814
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a single intravenous dose of iron (ferric derisomaltose) can improve mobility recovery in elderly patients after hip fracture surgery. Researchers will compare the iron group to a placebo group in 210 participants across three Danish hospitals. The main goal is to see if the treatment helps patients regain their pre-fracture walking ability, reduce fatigue, and improve blood counts.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ferric Derisomaltose (intravenous iron)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, one-time treatment to help elderly patients regain walking ability faster after hip fracture surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 4 trial, but the benefit may be modest or not apply to all patients. Risks include allergic reactions to iron, and the study is only in Denmark.
