Antifungal drug itraconazole tested for lung disease with mold
NCT ID NCT07283497
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study is testing whether the antifungal drug itraconazole is feasible and safe for people with bronchiectasis who have mold growing in their airways. Thirty participants will take itraconazole twice daily for six weeks. The study will measure how many people complete treatment, side effects, and changes in breathing symptoms and airway bacteria.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Itraconazole (an antifungal medication taken by mouth)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a new treatment option for bronchiectasis patients with mold in their airways, potentially improving symptoms and quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early pilot study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Itraconazole can cause liver side effects, and the drug may not be well tolerated.
