Talking through the pain: could uncovering hidden emotions relieve chronic symptoms?

NCT ID NCT06682104

First seen Jul 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 28, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether a short-term, intensive talk therapy called ISTDP can help people whose physical symptoms—like chronic pain, fatigue, or stomach issues—have not improved with other treatments. The therapy focuses on uncovering and processing unconscious emotions that may be fueling the symptoms. Twenty-five adults who have already had a medical evaluation and still experience significant distress will participate.

intensive short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new option for people with chronic physical symptoms that have not responded to standard medical or psychological care.
What could go wrong
This is a very small early trial with only 25 participants, so results may not apply widely. The therapy is intensive and may not be suitable for everyone.
