Which anesthetic is gentler on the body? new study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07152912

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study compares two widely used inhaled anesthetics, isoflurane and sevoflurane, to see which one causes less oxidative stress (a type of cell damage) in patients having gallbladder removal surgery. Researchers will measure stress markers in the blood of 80 healthy adults. The goal is to understand if one anesthetic is safer for routine surgeries.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Isoflurane and sevoflurane (inhalation anesthetics)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help doctors choose the safer anesthetic for surgery, potentially reducing cell damage and inflammation.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study focused on lab markers, not patient outcomes. The results may not change practice or apply to other surgeries.
