Can nutrient supplements deliver iron better? small study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT06870201

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study looks at how well young children absorb iron from special nutrient supplements. Researchers will give 30 children in Kenya (ages 1-3) a supplement with a harmless iron tracer, then measure iron levels in their blood two weeks later. Half the children are healthy, and half are undernourished. The goal is to understand if these supplements can effectively deliver iron to fight anemia.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Lipid-based nutrient supplement with stable iron isotope

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help design better iron-fortified supplements to fight anemia and undernutrition in children.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 30 children, so results may not apply broadly. It measures iron absorption, not health outcomes.
