Bone injection may cut opioid use after ACL surgery
NCT ID NCT06511232
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether injecting morphine directly into the bone during ACL reconstruction can lower pain and reduce the need for opioid painkillers afterward. About 84 adults aged 18-40 having ACL surgery with a specific type of graft will be randomly assigned to get either the bone injection or standard pain treatment. They will track their pain and medication use for two weeks and complete knee function surveys for up to 12 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- morphine
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a more targeted way to control pain after ACL surgery, potentially reducing the need for oral opioids.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study (84 people) testing a specific technique. It may not show a clear benefit over standard care, and intraosseous injection carries risks like infection or bone damage.
