No X-Rays needed? new scanner spots early tooth decay in minutes
NCT ID NCT07342595
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a handheld scanner that uses safe near-infrared light to find early cavities without radiation. Fifty adults scheduled for a tooth extraction will get an extra 5-minute scan before their procedure. The scanner's results will be compared to standard X-rays and visual checks to see if it can catch decay just as well. If it works, dentists might spot problems earlier and treat them with less drilling.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
intraoral scanner with near-infrared light (iTero Lumina)
What this could lead to
If successful, this scanner could help dentists find early cavities without X-rays, allowing less invasive treatments and better prevention.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 50 participants. The tool may not be as accurate as traditional methods, and results may not apply to all patients.
