Could a simple scan replace the goopy plaque dye at the dentist?
NCT ID NCT07555223
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a special intraoral scanner can accurately detect dental plaque and cavities, compared to standard methods like dye and X-rays. Researchers will scan the teeth of 50 adults aged 18 to 70 and compare the results to traditional plaque-disclosing agents and visual inspection with bitewing X-rays. If the scanner works well, it could make dental checkups faster and more comfortable.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
intraoral scanning device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a faster, less messy way to detect plaque and cavities during dental checkups.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 50 adults, so results may not apply to everyone. The scan might not catch all cavities or plaque compared to traditional methods.
