Can special alloy rings keep dental implants cleaner?
NCT ID NCT05122897
First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether temporary rings made of an antimicrobial alloy, placed on dental implant abutments, can reduce bacterial biofilm compared with standard titanium alloy rings. About 33 adults with one or more titanium implants will wear these rings, which are removed and replaced at 48 hours, 2 weeks, and 3 months to measure bacterial load and composition. The goal is to see if the antimicrobial material can limit plaque and potentially lower the risk of peri-implantitis, a common cause of implant failure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Rings made of antimicrobial alloy (Pagalinor, PA) compared with titanium alloy (TAN) rings placed on dental implant abutments
- What this could lead to
- If the antimicrobial alloy rings reduce biofilm, they could help prevent dental plaque and peri-implantitis around implants, improving long-term implant health.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small early-stage study, so results may not apply broadly. The rings are temporary and only tested in healthy people without active gum disease, and the alloy's effect on mature biofilm is uncertain.
