Scientists probe fasting blood sugar secrets in prediabetes study
NCT ID NCT06424015
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at how insulin and glucagon work together to control blood sugar levels when people are not eating. Researchers will give insulin and a fat emulsion to 60 volunteers with normal or impaired fasting glucose to see how their bodies respond. The goal is to better understand what goes wrong in prediabetes, which could lead to earlier detection or prevention of type 2 diabetes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Intralipid and heparin (to induce insulin resistance) and saline (control)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could reveal how insulin and glucagon interact to regulate fasting blood sugar, pointing toward new ways to detect or prevent type 2 diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage observational study (60 participants) that does not test a treatment. It aims to understand biology, not to cure or treat disease, so direct patient benefits are far off.
