Could a Blood-Derived gel help rebuild bone lost to gum disease?

NCT ID NCT07146776

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) to a standard bone graft helps fill in bone defects caused by advanced gum disease. Sixteen adults with stage III periodontitis will receive either the combo treatment or the graft alone during surgery. Researchers will measure bone fill and gum attachment levels over six months to see if the i-PRF makes a difference.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) mixed with bovine bone graft

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a better way to repair bone defects caused by gum disease, potentially improving tooth stability.

What could go wrong

This is a very small early trial (16 people) with no blinding, so results may not be reliable or generalizable. The procedure is surgical and carries typical risks like infection or pain.
