Could inhaling cancer drug be better than swallowing it? new study in smokers aims to find out

NCT ID NCT06897735

First seen Nov 18, 2025 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This early-phase study compares an inhaled version of the cancer drug afatinib to the standard oral pill in 24 healthy adult smokers. Researchers want to see if the inhaled form delivers the drug more directly to the lungs with fewer side effects. Participants will receive both forms at different times, and the study measures drug levels in blood, urine, and lung fluid. This is a pilot study to gather safety and dosing information, not a treatment trial.
