Mesh fails to prevent hernias in aortic repair patients
NCT ID NCT07416422
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at whether placing a mesh during abdominal aortic aneurysm repair could prevent incisional hernias later. Fifty patients were split into two groups: one got mesh reinforcement, the other standard closure. After follow-up, the mesh did not show a clear benefit in preventing hernias.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
prophylactic onlay mesh
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could reduce incisional hernias after open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.
What could go wrong
The study was small (50 patients) and completed without showing a clear benefit. Results may not apply to all patients or surgical techniques.
