Quick blood transfusions may keep seniors Clear-Headed after hip surgery

NCT ID NCT06938789

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving blood transfusions quickly when hemoglobin drops can prevent delirium (sudden confusion) in patients 75 and older after hip fracture surgery. About 198 participants will be randomly assigned to either early transfusion or standard care. Researchers will check for delirium three times a day for two days after surgery and follow up at 30 and 90 days.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Blood transfusion
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple way to prevent delirium after hip fracture surgery in older patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (198 participants) testing a common intervention, so the benefit may be modest or not statistically significant. Delirium has many causes, so preventing it with transfusions alone may not be enough.
