Scans may spot gout risk years before first attack

NCT ID NCT05434858

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study follows 21 people with high uric acid but no gout symptoms for up to 5 years. Researchers use ultrasound and CT scans to look for tiny crystal deposits in joints. The goal is to see if these deposits can predict who will later develop painful gout flares.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors identify who will develop gout before symptoms start, allowing earlier prevention.

What could go wrong

This is a very small observational study (21 people) with no treatment being tested. Results may not apply to everyone and cannot guarantee prediction accuracy.
