Gene-Edited immune cells take on aggressive brain tumors

NCT ID NCT06815029

First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 1 trial tests a new type of immunotherapy for people with recurrent or progressive high-grade gliomas, including glioblastoma. The treatment uses the patient's own T cells, which are genetically modified in the lab to target a protein called IL13Rα2 found on tumor cells, and also edited with CRISPR to resist signals that normally suppress immune attack. The cells are infused directly into the skull. The main goal is to evaluate safety and find the best dose.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

TGFβR2KO/IL13Rα2 CAR T cells

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could offer a new treatment option for patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas, a type of aggressive brain cancer with few effective therapies.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 1 trial with only 27 participants, so safety and dosing are still being evaluated. The treatment involves intracranial infusion and carries risks such as cytokine release syndrome and neurotoxicity.
