Scientists engineer 'smarter' IL-2 to tame overactive immune systems

NCT ID NCT05544448

First seen Feb 16, 2026 · Last updated Apr 23, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study tested specially engineered versions of a natural immune protein (IL-2) in blood samples from 67 people with autoimmune or inflammatory diseases like lupus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The goal was to see if these modified proteins could selectively activate regulatory T cells, which help calm the immune system. The research was done in a lab, not in patients, and measured cell responses rather than treating disease.
