First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at 125 patients who were in the ICU, on a breathing machine and sedated for at least 48 hours. Researchers want to see how many have trouble with thinking or memory four months after leaving the hospital. Patients will talk to a psychologist before leaving the ICU and again at two and four months after discharge.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors understand which ICU patients are at risk for long-term thinking or memory problems, leading to better follow-up care.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage observational study, not a treatment trial. It can only suggest links, not prove causes. Results may not apply to all ICU patients.
