Could your own blood ease jaw pain? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT07188974

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This completed trial tested whether an injection made from a patient's own blood (platelet-rich fibrin) can improve pain and jaw opening in people with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Forty adults were randomly assigned to receive either standard joint washing alone or joint washing plus the blood-based injection. Pain and mouth opening were measured at one week and one month after treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) made from the patient's own blood

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, natural treatment option for jaw pain and stiffness using the patient's own blood components.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 40 people and short follow-up (1 month). The results may not apply to everyone, and the treatment may not be better than standard care.
