Could a Two-Hormone combo beat standard thyroid treatment?

NCT ID NCT06731764

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding a second thyroid hormone (liothyronine) to the standard levothyroxine treatment can improve cholesterol levels and quality of life in people with hypothyroidism. About 90 adults with hypothyroidism will be randomly assigned to receive either standard levothyroxine, or levothyroxine plus liothyronine taken once or twice daily. The goal is to find a safe and effective dosing regimen for future larger trials.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Levothyroxine and liothyronine (thyroid hormone combination therapy)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a more effective treatment for hypothyroidism that improves cholesterol levels and quality of life compared to standard levothyroxine alone.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (90 people) that is still recruiting, so results may not apply to everyone. The combination therapy may not prove better than standard treatment and could have side effects.
