First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding hyperbaric oxygen therapy (breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber) to standard steroid drugs helps people with severe ulcerative colitis get better faster. About 44 adults with acute severe colitis will be randomly assigned to receive either standard treatment alone or standard treatment plus hyperbaric oxygen. The goal is to see if the oxygen therapy improves symptoms and reduces inflammation in the colon.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
hyperbaric oxygen therapy
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a new, non-drug option to help control severe flare-ups of ulcerative colitis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 44 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Hyperbaric oxygen can cause ear or sinus discomfort in some people.
