Hot springs for athletes: a soaking solution to fatigue?
NCT ID NCT07615478
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether soaking in hot spring water helps teenage rowers recover from central fatigue and maintain mental sharpness during high-altitude training. Twenty-seven athletes aged 12-16 will either rest normally, bathe in plain warm water, or bathe in sodium bicarbonate hot spring water three times a week for four weeks. Researchers will measure muscle activation, cognitive tests, and blood markers to see if the hot springs provide any extra benefit.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
hot spring water (sodium bicarbonate)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to help athletes recover from intense training and keep their minds sharp.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early study in healthy teen athletes, so results may not apply to others. The benefits might be small or not show up at all.
