New hospital program aims to keep opioid patients on methadone after discharge
NCT ID NCT07568847
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether completing methadone clinic intake during a hospital stay helps people with opioid use disorder stay connected to treatment after leaving. Researchers will compare usual care (a referral at discharge) to a program where hospital staff complete key steps like medical assessment and methadone initiation before the patient goes home. The goal is to see if this approach increases the number of people who successfully link to a methadone clinic within 7 days of discharge.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
methadone
What this could lead to
If this works, it could make it easier for people leaving the hospital to stay on methadone treatment, reducing the risk of relapse, overdose, and repeat hospital visits.
What could go wrong
This is an early implementation study, not a drug trial. Success depends on hospital staff following new workflows, and results may vary across hospitals. It does not test a new medication.
