NCT ID NCT06245681
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how gender-affirming hormone therapy with testosterone or estrogen changes heart function, fat in the liver and heart, and insulin sensitivity. Researchers will follow 40 transgender adults (20 male-to-female, 20 female-to-male) for 6 months using MRI scans and glucose tests. The goal is to better understand the cardiovascular risks and benefits of these hormones.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- gender-affirming hormone therapy (testosterone or estrogen)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this study could clarify how sex hormones influence heart health and fat distribution, potentially guiding safer hormone therapy for transgender individuals.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It observes changes but does not test a new treatment, so no direct health benefits are expected.
