Hormone Therapy's hidden heart effects under the microscope

NCT ID NCT06245681

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at how gender-affirming hormone therapy with testosterone or estrogen changes heart function, fat in the liver and heart, and insulin sensitivity. Researchers will follow 40 transgender adults (20 male-to-female, 20 female-to-male) for 6 months using MRI scans and glucose tests. The goal is to better understand the cardiovascular risks and benefits of these hormones.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
gender-affirming hormone therapy (testosterone or estrogen)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could clarify how sex hormones influence heart health and fat distribution, potentially guiding safer hormone therapy for transgender individuals.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It observes changes but does not test a new treatment, so no direct health benefits are expected.
