ALS patients may soon start breathing machines at home, avoiding hospital stays
NCT ID NCT05829330
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether people with ALS can start using a breathing machine at home instead of in the hospital. 46 patients were randomly assigned to start either at home with remote monitoring or in the hospital. The goal was to see if home initiation works just as well, measured by how many minutes per day they used the machine.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
non-invasive mechanical ventilation
What this could lead to
If successful, this could allow ALS patients to start breathing support at home instead of being hospitalized, improving comfort and reducing hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 46 participants. The results may not apply to all ALS patients, and home initiation might not work as well for everyone.
