NCT ID NCT01038401

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at why HIV remains in the body even when standard treatment keeps virus levels undetectable in the blood. Researchers will take small tissue samples from the gut and blood of 30 HIV-positive adults on effective therapy. The goal is to understand how the virus persists in gut tissue, which may help develop future strategies to eliminate it.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could reveal why HIV hides in the gut, pointing toward new strategies to eliminate these viral reservoirs.

What could go wrong

This is a small, observational study with only 30 participants. It does not test a new treatment, so any insights are preliminary and may not lead to direct therapies.
