New study aims to keep HIV patients on track after prison release
NCT ID NCT06027671
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests a program called Full-SPARCS, where trained peers lead group sessions to help people with HIV stay in care after they leave prison in South Africa. The program includes one-on-one check-ins and group meetings in community centers. Researchers will compare viral suppression rates at 6 and 12 months between those in the program and those receiving usual care. 400 participants are being recruited from correctional facilities.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
peer-led support group program (Full-SPARCS)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a practical, scalable way to help people with HIV stay healthy after leaving prison, reducing viral spread and improving long-term outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral intervention, not a new drug, so results may vary by setting. The study is still recruiting, and success depends on participants attending group sessions and staying engaged.
