New combo therapy aims to free ventilator patients faster
NCT ID NCT05932134
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether adding a high-protein diet, core muscle exercises, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation helps patients who have been on a breathing machine for over 21 days wean off it. One hundred participants received these treatments alongside usual care. The main goal was to see if more patients could breathe without the ventilator for five straight days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
high protein diet, core muscle rehabilitation, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation
What this could lead to
If successful, this combination could help patients on long-term ventilators wean off faster, reducing hospital stays and complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial without a randomized phase. Results may not apply to all patients, and the interventions require significant effort and resources.
