Blood thinner switch may skew lab results, study warns
NCT ID NCT07302620
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at whether common blood thinners like heparin can mess up lab tests for another blood thinner, argatroban. Doctors often switch patients from heparin to argatroban, but current tests can't tell the two drugs apart. Researchers will analyze blood samples from 70 adults on heparin to see if leftover heparin causes false high readings of argatroban, which could lead to dangerous dosing mistakes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors more accurately monitor argatroban levels in patients switching from heparin, reducing bleeding or clotting risks.
What could go wrong
This is a small, observational study (70 participants) that only looks at lab test accuracy, not patient outcomes. It may not change clinical practice directly.
