Battle of the bands: which hemorrhoid treatment wins?

NCT ID NCT07559630

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two standard treatments for bleeding internal hemorrhoids: hemorrhoidal artery embolization (HAE) and rubber band ligation (RBL). HAE uses a catheter to block blood flow to the hemorrhoid with tiny particles or coils, while RBL uses rubber bands to cut off circulation. The trial will enroll 40 adults with grade II-III internal hemorrhoids who have not improved with conservative care, and will track which treatment controls bleeding with fewer procedures.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Hemorrhoidal artery embolization (tiny particles or coils) and rubber band ligation

What this could lead to

If this trial succeeds, it could show which standard treatment is more effective for controlling hemorrhoidal bleeding and improving quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both procedures have risks like pain, bleeding, or infection.
