Less surgery may be just as good for Low-Risk thyroid cancer
NCT ID NCT05604963
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two surgical options for people with low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer: removing only part of the thyroid (hemithyroidectomy) or the entire gland (total thyroidectomy). The goal is to see if the less extensive surgery is as effective at preventing cancer recurrence while causing fewer side effects. About 456 participants will be followed for up to 6 years after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- surgical procedure (hemithyroidectomy or total thyroidectomy)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that removing only part of the thyroid is a safe and cost-effective option for low-risk thyroid cancer, reducing complications from full removal.
- What could go wrong
- This is a non-inferiority trial, meaning it aims to prove that less surgery is not worse than more surgery. It may still show higher recurrence rates with partial removal, and results may not apply to higher-risk cancers.
