Warm oxygen may shield patients from Post-Surgery breathing danger
NCT ID NCT07778420
First seen Aug 21, 2026 · Last updated Aug 21, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether giving heated and humidified oxygen during recovery from general anesthesia can reduce the chance of early hypoxemia—a dangerous drop in blood oxygen levels—compared to standard room-temperature oxygen. About 2,000 adults undergoing surgery will be randomly assigned to receive one of the two oxygen types through a face mask. The main goal is to see if the heated version lowers the rate of hypoxemia within the first 10 minutes of recovery, which could lead to safer post-surgery care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Heated and humidified oxygen therapy delivered via face mask
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this simple oxygen delivery method could become a standard practice to prevent dangerous drops in blood oxygen levels after surgery, improving patient safety and recovery.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage trial, and the benefit may be small or not apply to all patients. There is also a risk of nasal discomfort or other minor side effects from the heated oxygen.
