New study tests if low oxygen makes heat stress worse for workers
NCT ID NCT07664462
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether low oxygen levels (like at high altitudes) increase the risk of heat stress during moderate work in hot environments. Twenty healthy young and older men will walk on a treadmill in a hot room, once with normal oxygen and once with low oxygen. Researchers will measure body temperature, heart strain, and other signs to see if current safety guidelines need updating for combined heat and low-oxygen conditions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could lead to better safety guidelines for workers exposed to both heat and low oxygen, such as at high altitudes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 20 healthy male participants, so results may not apply to women or people with health conditions. It is designed to gather knowledge, not to test a treatment.
