Could one blood thinner be enough after a heart attack? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT07583784
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study compares two approaches to blood thinning after a heart attack in patients with atrial fibrillation. One group gets two blood thinners (a DOAC plus clopidogrel), while the other gets only one (a DOAC alone). The goal is to see if using just one drug reduces bleeding risks without increasing the chance of another heart attack or stroke. About 860 adults will take part.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Direct oral anticoagulants (apixaban, edoxaban, or rivaroxaban) with or without clopidogrel
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that using only one blood thinner is safer and just as effective as two after a heart attack in people with atrial fibrillation, potentially reducing bleeding complications.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively early-stage trial with 860 participants, and the results may not apply to all patients. There is a risk that single therapy might not prevent future heart attacks or strokes as well as dual therapy.
