First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tested a free smartphone app called the Healthy Minds Program (HMP) in over 1,100 US adults with mild to moderate depression. Participants used the app for 4 weeks and were compared to those who received only educational content or were placed on a waitlist. The goal was to see if the meditation training could reduce depression and anxiety symptoms.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Healthy Minds Program (HMP) app – a 4-week mobile meditation training program
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a free, accessible app-based tool to help reduce depression and anxiety symptoms without medication.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial, but the app is a short-term intervention and may not work for everyone. Results depend on self-reported symptoms, and benefits might not last long-term.
