Gum recession showdown: which surgery covers more?
NCT ID NCT07158528
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two surgical techniques—coronally advanced flap (CAF) and tunneled coronally advanced flap (TCAF)—both combined with a soft tissue graft, to treat receding gums in the upper jaw. Thirty-four adults with multiple gum recessions will be randomly assigned to one procedure and followed for up to 10 years. The goal is to see which method provides better root coverage, which can reduce tooth sensitivity and improve appearance.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- surgical procedure (coronally advanced flap or tunneled coronally advanced flap with connective tissue graft)
- What this could lead to
- If one technique proves better, it could lead to more effective and lasting gum recession coverage, reducing tooth sensitivity and improving smile aesthetics.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 34 participants. Results may not apply to everyone, and surgery carries risks like pain, swelling, or graft failure.
