Dental thread tested: can a retraction cord protect gums during fillings?
NCT ID NCT07734935
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Aug 05, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This trial investigates whether placing a retraction cord—a thin thread that pushes the gum aside—during a tooth restoration affects gum health. Adults with non-carious cervical lesions (tooth damage near the gumline not caused by decay) will receive composite restorations either with or without the cord. Researchers will measure gum inflammation, bleeding, and fluid markers over 28 days to see if the cord makes a difference.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- gingival retraction cord placed in the gum sulcus during restorative treatment
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could help dentists choose techniques that minimize gum irritation during tooth repairs.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small early-stage trial with only 10 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The procedure itself may cause temporary gum discomfort.
