Gum health showdown: fixed vs removable retainers after braces

NCT ID NCT07650630

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares how fixed and removable retainers affect gum health in people who just finished braces. 46 participants with all lower front teeth will be randomly assigned to one retainer type. Researchers will measure gum pockets, bleeding, and plaque to see which retainer leads to healthier gums.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If this trial succeeds, it could help dentists choose the best retainer type to keep gums healthy after braces.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 46 people. Results may not apply to everyone, and it only looks at short-term gum health, not long-term tooth stability.
