Tooth fillings before gum surgery may boost root coverage for receding gums
NCT ID NCT07687654
First seen Jul 07, 2026 · Last updated Jul 08, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial studies whether filling a small cavity or worn area on the tooth root before gum surgery helps cover the exposed root better than surgery alone. Adults with gum recession and shallow tooth defects will receive either a glass ionomer filling, a resin composite filling, or no filling before a standard gum graft procedure. Researchers will measure how much of the root is covered and how stable the gum tissue remains over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- glass ionomer cement or resin composite filling material
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that filling certain tooth defects before gum surgery leads to better coverage of exposed roots and more stable long-term results.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Different filling materials may not significantly improve outcomes over no filling at all.
