New scan could spare men unnecessary biopsies

NCT ID NCT07258056

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a special PET/MRI scan (PSMA) can find aggressive prostate cancer better than standard biopsies in men with a negative MRI but still suspected of having cancer. One hundred men will receive both the new targeted biopsies and standard systematic biopsies. The goal is to see if the new method can safely avoid biopsies when the scan is negative, while catching more aggressive cancers when positive.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
PSMA PET/MRI imaging and targeted biopsies
What this could lead to
If successful, this could reduce unnecessary biopsies and improve detection of aggressive prostate cancer in men with negative MRI scans.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage diagnostic study with only 100 participants. The new method may not prove more accurate than standard biopsies, and results may not apply to all men.
