Glowing dye could reveal invisible cancer clues in the esophagus

NCT ID NCT07643727

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a fluorescent tracer called WGA-800CW can make precancerous or cancerous cells in Barrett's esophagus glow during endoscopy. The tracer is sprayed onto the esophagus, and special cameras detect the glow. The goal is to find the best dose and see if this method can spot dysplasia that standard scopes miss. About 49 adults with Barrett's esophagus will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

WGA-800CW (a fluorescent tracer made from wheat germ agglutinin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this imaging technique could help doctors find precancerous spots in Barrett's esophagus that are invisible under standard endoscopy, enabling earlier treatment.

What could go wrong

This is an early pilot study with only 49 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The tracer is sprayed directly onto the esophagus, and its safety and effectiveness are still being tested.
