Scientists test new way to track nutrient use in bone marrow cells

NCT ID NCT03384108

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This pilot study aims to see if a new method can measure how healthy bone marrow plasma cells use glutamine, an important nutrient. Twenty healthy adults will receive an intravenous infusion of a special labeled glutamine, followed by a bone marrow aspiration. The goal is to compare this in-person approach with lab-based methods, laying groundwork for future disease research.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

5-13C-Glutamine (a labeled form of glutamine given intravenously)

What this could lead to

If successful, this method could help researchers understand how plasma cells use nutrients, potentially guiding future treatments for diseases like multiple myeloma.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small pilot study in healthy people, not patients. It only tests the measurement method, not a treatment, so it may not lead directly to any therapy.
