Pausing GLP-1 drugs before surgery: new study aims to find the sweet spot
NCT ID NCT07623148
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study watches 186 adults who take GLP-1 drugs (like Ozempic) and are having planned surgery. Researchers use a stomach ultrasound to check how much food or liquid is left in the stomach after stopping the drug for different lengths of time. The goal is to see if longer pauses lead to emptier stomachs, which may lower the risk of complications during anesthesia.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors give clearer guidance on when to pause GLP-1 drugs before surgery to reduce the risk of food or liquid remaining in the stomach.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It only measures stomach contents with ultrasound and does not test any new drug or intervention. Results may not apply to all patients or surgeries.
