Tiny genes, big questions: can DNA predict lung disease in preemies?

NCT ID NCT00710112

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is looking at whether small differences in certain genes make very low birth-weight babies more likely to develop chronic lung disease and other complications of prematurity. Researchers will compare the genes of 1,100 infants who develop these conditions with those who do not. The goal is to better understand why some preemies get sicker than others.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors identify which premature infants are at highest risk for lung disease and other complications, allowing for earlier monitoring or tailored care.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not directly improve health outcomes, and genetic links found may not lead to practical changes in care.
