Scientists probe gene changes behind RLS drug side effects
NCT ID NCT06726785
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tracks gene changes in people with Restless Legs Syndrome who take dopamine agonists for different lengths of time. Researchers will collect nasal swabs from 50 participants—some new to the drugs, others on them for 6+ months—to see how key genes change. The goal is to better understand augmentation syndrome, a condition where symptoms worsen over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dopamine agonists (pramipexole, ropinirole, rotigotine, apomorphine, bromocriptine)
What this could lead to
If successful, this research could help explain why some RLS patients get worse over time with dopamine agonists, potentially pointing toward safer treatment strategies.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early observational study (50 people) measuring gene expression, not a treatment trial. It may not find clear patterns or lead directly to new treatments.
