New trick before surgery may prevent deadly leaks in esophageal cancer patients
NCT ID NCT07449208
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether a procedure called gastric preconditioning—done before esophageal cancer surgery—can lower the risk of a serious complication called an anastomotic leak. The procedure uses a tiny tube to redirect blood flow in the stomach, which may help the surgical connection heal better. The study will include 40 high-risk patients and track how many develop leaks after their main surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- percutaneous angioembolization (a procedure to redirect blood flow in the stomach before surgery)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could reduce the risk of serious post-surgery complications (anastomotic leaks) in patients undergoing esophageal cancer removal.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small early-phase study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The procedure itself carries risks like bleeding or infection.
