New ultrasound technique could prevent second surgery for gallstones after Weight-Loss surgery
NCT ID NCT07453186
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares standard ultrasound (done on the outside of the belly) with laparoscopic ultrasound (done inside the abdomen during weight-loss surgery) to see which finds more gallstones and other gallbladder issues. The goal is to better identify patients who could benefit from preventive medication, potentially reducing the need for a second gallbladder surgery. About 130 adults scheduled for bariatric surgery will participate.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could improve detection of gallstones in bariatric patients, helping doctors decide who needs preventive medication and reducing the need for a second surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a diagnostic accuracy study, not a treatment trial. The results may not change outcomes if preventive treatments are ineffective or not adopted. The study is also relatively small (130 participants).
