Spinal fusion surgery may be unnecessary for some back pain patients, new trial suggests

NCT ID NCT05273879

First seen Jan 10, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study compares two surgical treatments for single-level lumbar spinal stenosis: decompression alone versus decompression with fusion. About 86 adults aged 45-75 with severe stenosis will be randomly assigned to one of the two procedures. The goal is to see if fusion is truly needed, which could reduce surgery risks and costs. Results will measure disability, quality of life, and economic impact over two years.
