Heart artery study tests smarter imaging to prevent attacks
NCT ID NCT01881555
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether adding a special pressure wire measurement (FFR) to standard angiography helps doctors decide the best treatment for people with multiple blocked heart arteries. Over 900 patients were randomly assigned to get either angiography alone or angiography plus FFR to guide their care. The goal was to see if the FFR-guided approach reduces major heart problems like death, heart attack, or the need for more procedures within one year.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
invasive coronary angiography with or without fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that adding FFR testing to angiography helps doctors choose better treatments, reducing heart attacks and deaths in people with multiple blocked arteries.
What could go wrong
This trial is completed, but the results may not apply to all patients or settings. FFR testing adds time and cost, and the benefit may be small or limited to certain subgroups.
